Peppermint is a species within the genus Mentha as well as Spearmint and many other hybrids. According to Greek mythology Minthe was a minor river goddess nymph who invoked the wrath of Persephone, the wife of Hades, when he tried to seduce her. The jealous Persophone turned Minthe into a plant condemned to be trampled forever but Hades apparently lightened the sentence by making her at least smell sweet.
The 3570 year old Egyptian medical textbook, the Ebers Papyrus, lists mint as a remedy for stomach pains. Mint was discovered in Egyptian pyramids dating back over 1000 BCE. Even the vikings appreciated a minty fresh breath with mint listed in herbal remedies in Iceland around 1240. Similar recordings exist noting the use of Mint by religious monks in the middle ages to polish their teeth and freshen their breath.
